Healing comes in many forms; sometimes it has four legs and a wagging tail.

May is MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, and at Vitality Family Medical Group, we believe that mental health is not separate from physical health — it is the foundation of it. This year, we had the privilege of celebrating with our community in a way we will not soon forget, and we want to use this moment to remind every person in the Rio Grande Valley: you are not alone, help is available, and taking care of your mind is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters in the Rio Grande Valley

Mental health challenges are more common than most people realize, and in South Texas, they are often quietly carried alone. Cultural expectations, limited access to care, and the stigma surrounding mental health can make it feel impossible to reach out.

But the truth is: STRUGGLING IS NOT A WEAKNESS. Anxiety, depression, grief, chronic stress - these are health conditions, just like diabetes or high blood pressure. They deserve the same attention, the same care, and the same freedom from shame.

At Vitality Family Medical Group, we see the whole patient. That means when you walk through our doors, your mental and emotional well-being matters just as much to us as your lab results.

A Special Visitor Who Reminded Us What Healing Looks Like

This past May, we were honored to welcome a very special guest to our clinic: CHAPPIE, a critical incident canine who travels across the United States serving communities in some of their hardest moments.

Critical incident canines like Chappie are specially trained animals deployed to provide comfort, calm, and emotional relief in the aftermath of trauma, crisis, and community hardship. THEIR PRESENCE HAS BEEN SHOWN BY RESEARCH TO REDUCE ANXIETY, LOWER STRESS HORMONES, AND RESTORE A SENSE OF CALM in ways that words sometimes simply cannot.

We shared gifts, snacks, smiles, and a moment that reminded every single person in our clinic that healing does not always look like a prescription or a therapy session. Sometimes it looks like kneeling down, scratching behind a pair of ears, and feeling, even just for a moment, that everything is going to be okay.

Thank you, Chappie. You made our day and reminded us why we do what we do.

How Does Mental Health Affect Your Physical Health?

The mind and body are not separate systems. CHRONIC STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION can directly impact:

• Blood pressure and heart health

• Blood sugar levels and diabetes management

• Sleep quality and immune function

• Energy levels and motivation to exercise or eat well

• Chronic pain and inflammation

This is why at Vitality, we take a whole-person approach to care. If you come in for a wellness visit and you mention that you have been feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected — we listen. That conversation matters. It may be the most important one we have.

What Are the Signs That You May Need Support?

Many people wait far too long before reaching out. Here are signs that it may be time to talk to someone:

• Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless for more than two weeks

• Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much

• Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy

• Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

• Feeling overwhelmed, irritable, or on edge most of the time

• Withdrawing from family and friends

• Physical symptoms without a clear cause: headaches, stomach issues, fatigue

• Thoughts of harming yourself or others

If you are experiencing any of these, please reach out. You do not need to be in a crisis to deserve support. Asking for help early is one of the most courageous and effective things you can do.
